Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said this week he will continue directing the vast majority of his personal wealth toward global health, climate, and education initiatives, according to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s annual update. The statement, released at the foundation’s headquarters in Seattle, outlined ongoing funding priorities and progress as the organization enters another year of large-scale international grantmaking.
Bill Gates, who stepped away from daily involvement at Microsoft years ago, said the foundation remains focused on reducing preventable disease, improving access to vaccines, and supporting innovation to address climate change. The organization reported billions of dollars in active commitments across Africa, South Asia, and the United States.
In a written statement, Bill Gates said global health setbacks linked to conflict, economic instability, and pandemic aftereffects have reinforced the need for sustained philanthropic investment. He pointed to expanded malaria vaccine rollouts and renewed efforts to combat tuberculosis as examples of current priorities.
The foundation also highlighted continued work in U.S. education, including support for community colleges and data-driven approaches to improving student outcomes. Climate-related investments, particularly in clean energy research and adaptation strategies for vulnerable regions, were cited as a growing share of the portfolio.
Bill Gates has previously said he intends to give away nearly all of his wealth over his lifetime, a commitment made alongside other billionaires through the Giving Pledge. The foundation said its long-term strategy has not changed, but emphasized a sharper focus on measurable results and partnerships with governments and international agencies.
The update comes amid broader debate over the role of private philanthropy in public policy, with critics questioning accountability and influence. Foundation officials said programs are designed in collaboration with local authorities and are subject to independent evaluation.
The foundation did not announce major new initiatives but said additional funding details would be released later in the year. The story is developing.
