Apple is preparing to release the second generation of its premium over-ear headphones, widely referred to as AirPods Max 2, according to multiple industry reports and supply-chain analysts. The updated model is expected to introduce improved audio performance, longer battery life, and updated connectivity features. Apple has not officially confirmed the product or announced a release date.
The original AirPods Max 2 were introduced by Apple in December 2020 as the company’s first over-ear headphones under the AirPods brand. The headphones featured active noise cancellation, spatial audio support, and a premium aluminum design, positioning them at the high end of the consumer audio market.
Industry analysts say the next version is expected to incorporate an updated wireless chip, likely the same generation used in newer AirPods models. Reports indicate the device may also improve Bluetooth connectivity and power efficiency, addressing battery performance concerns raised by some users of the original model.
The anticipated headphones are also expected to support advanced audio processing tied to Apple Vision Pro and other Apple ecosystem devices, continuing the company’s strategy of tightly integrating hardware across its product lineup.
Several technology analysts, including those cited by supply-chain research firms, have suggested that Apple could update the design with lighter materials and new color options while maintaining the recognizable over-ear structure introduced with the first model.
Pricing details have not been confirmed. The current AirPods Max 2 retail for around $549 in the United States, making them one of the most expensive mainstream wireless headphones available. Analysts say Apple typically maintains premium pricing while adding incremental hardware improvements in follow-up models.
The launch timing remains unclear, though some reports suggest the headphones could arrive alongside other hardware updates during a future Apple product event. Apple routinely introduces new AirPods products during its annual hardware announcements.
If released, AirPods Max 2 would expand Apple’s growing portfolio of audio devices, which includes multiple versions of AirPods and the AirPods Pro lineup. The company has increasingly focused on spatial audio and immersive listening features as part of its broader ecosystem strategy.
