Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, reiterated Tehran’s strategic and security priorities during a meeting with senior officials in Tehran this week, emphasizing resistance to foreign pressure and continued regional engagement, according to state media reports. The remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East and ongoing diplomatic discussions over Iran’s nuclear program.
Ayatollah Khamenei, who has held the country’s highest authority since 1989, addressed members of Iran’s Assembly of Experts and senior military commanders, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported. He stressed what he described as Iran’s “independence” in foreign policy and warned against what he called external interference in the region.
Iran has faced sustained international scrutiny over its nuclear activities. Talks aimed at reviving or replacing the 2015 nuclear agreement have stalled in recent years, with Western officials expressing concern over Tehran’s uranium enrichment levels. Iranian authorities maintain that the program is for peaceful purposes.
In his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei also highlighted domestic economic challenges, urging government officials to focus on inflation and employment. Iran’s economy has been under pressure from U.S. sanctions reimposed after Washington withdrew from the nuclear deal in 2018.
The Supreme Leader reiterated support for allied groups in the region, framing the policy as part of Iran’s broader security doctrine. Western governments have long criticized Tehran’s backing of armed groups across the Middle East, while Iranian officials describe the approach as defensive.
Ayatollah Khamenei statements come as regional conflicts, including the war in Gaza and ongoing instability in Syria and Iraq, continue to reshape diplomatic dynamics. Analysts say Iran’s leadership is seeking to balance domestic economic pressures with strategic objectives abroad.
