A fast-moving Fort Collins fire forced temporary evacuations north of the city on Thursday after flames broke out near the Laporte area in Larimer County, according to emergency officials. The wildfire, reported near Terry Lake, spread quickly amid strong winds and dry vegetation before firefighters responded from multiple agencies and brought the blaze under control later in the day.
Larimer County emergency managers issued mandatory evacuation orders for homes near Terry Lake Road, including areas stretching south toward Vine Drive and west toward North Overland Trail. Officials said residents were urged to leave immediately as the Fort Collins fire generated heavy smoke visible across parts of northern Colorado.
Fire crews from local departments and regional wildfire teams responded quickly to contain the blaze. Authorities said firefighters worked to slow the spread of the Fort Collins fire while gusty winds created challenging conditions on the ground.
By the afternoon, officials announced that the fire had been largely contained. Evacuation orders were lifted as crews transitioned into mop-up operations to extinguish remaining hotspots and secure the perimeter of the burn area.
The Fort Collins fire occurred during a period of elevated wildfire danger across northern Colorado. Meteorologists had warned that strong winds and dry conditions across the Front Range could increase the risk of rapidly spreading grass and brush fires.
Authorities said no injuries or structural damage were immediately reported. Firefighters remained in the area to monitor conditions and prevent flare-ups as containment efforts continued.
