Lloyds Banking Group has confirmed plans to close dozens of bank branches across the United Kingdom in 2026 as part of an ongoing shift toward digital banking, according to company statements and published closure schedules. The programme affects both Lloyds Bank and Halifax locations and is expected to be rolled out in stages throughout the year, impacting communities nationwide.
The banking group has outlined a total of 54 planned closures, with branches set to shut between January and late 2026. The company said the decision reflects changing customer behaviour, with more transactions now carried out online or through mobile apps rather than in person. Lloyds Banking Group stated that branch usage has continued to decline over recent years.
Affected locations span England, Scotland, and Wales, including city centres, suburban areas, and smaller towns. Customers of both Lloyds Bank and Halifax will see local branches close, though the company said alternative banking options will remain available through nearby branches, digital services, telephone banking, and the Post Office network.
Lloyds Banking Group said it has informed staff at affected branches and will offer redeployment opportunities where possible. The group added that it continues to invest in digital infrastructure while also maintaining a physical presence in communities where demand remains strong.
Consumer groups and local representatives have raised concerns about the impact of closures on elderly customers and those with limited access to digital services. In response, Lloyds Banking Group said it carries out community impact assessments before confirming closures and provides support to help customers transition to alternative banking methods.
The closures form part of a wider trend across the UK banking sector, with major lenders reducing branch networks as online banking becomes dominant. Industry data shows hundreds of branches have closed nationwide over the past decade.
The company said the 2026 closures are subject to final confirmation dates and that customers will be notified directly well in advance. Further details are expected to be published as the schedule progresses.
