San Francisco — Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford was named the National Football League’s Most Valuable Player at the 2026 NFL MVP Honors, recognizing his performance during the 2025 regular season, according to league officials and award organizers. The ceremony took place February 5 in San Francisco, days before the Super Bowl, with the Associated Press honor widely regarded as the league’s most prestigious individual award.
Stafford secured the first MVP of his career after leading the league with 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdown passes, guiding the Rams to a deep playoff run despite injury concerns earlier in the year. His selection came in one of the closest MVP races in decades, narrowly edging New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye in the final voting.
At age 37, Stafford’s season marked a late-career peak following years of fluctuating team success earlier in his tenure with the Detroit Lions and subsequent revival with the Rams. He confirmed during the awards program that he intends to return for another NFL MVP season, signaling continuity for Los Angeles heading into the next campaign.
The annual NFL MVP Honors ceremony recognizes top performances across the league. Other major awards presented for the 2025 season included Defensive Player of the Year to Cleveland Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett, Offensive Rookie of the Year to Carolina Panthers receiver Tetairoa McMillan, Defensive Rookie of the Year to Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger, Comeback Player of the Year to San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, and Coach of the Year to New England’s Mike Vrabel.
The MVP award, presented by the Associated Press since 1957 and determined by a national media panel, is considered the NFL MVP definitive individual honor for regular-season performance. Stafford’s victory places him among veteran quarterbacks who have captured the distinction late in their careers, underscoring the longevity increasingly seen at the position.
