The Dallas Cowboys have acquired veteran pass rusher Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers in a trade announced Monday as the NFL’s offseason transaction period begins. According to multiple reports, Green Bay will receive a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft in exchange for the 28-year-old defensive end, a former first-round selection and 2024 Pro Bowl player.
The move comes as teams begin negotiating during the league’s legal tampering window ahead of the official start of free agency. The Cowboys are seeking to reinforce their defensive front after recent roster changes, while the Packers gain salary-cap flexibility heading into the 2026 season.
Rashan Gary, who was selected 12th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft out of the University of Michigan, spent seven seasons in Green Bay and became one of the team’s key defensive contributors. Over his career with the Packers, he recorded 271 tackles, 46.5 sacks and seven forced fumbles, according to league statistics.
The trade also carries financial implications for the Packers. Reports indicate the move will clear roughly $11 million in cap space for Green Bay while leaving the team with more than $17 million in dead cap charges.
Rashan Gary signed a multi-year contract extension with Green Bay in 2023 and earned Pro Bowl honors in 2024. However, his performance and playing time have fluctuated since suffering a significant knee injury during the 2022 season, according to team and league reports.
For Dallas, the acquisition adds an experienced edge rusher to a defense that has undergone significant changes in recent seasons. Analysts say the move could strengthen the Cowboys’ pass rush as the franchise reshapes its defensive lineup ahead of the 2026 campaign.
League transactions are expected to continue as teams finalize deals Rashan Gary during the early days of free agency and prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft and training camp later this year.
