Oscar-winning Malaysian actor Michelle Yeoh is set to receive the Honorary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival, where a new collaboration with director Sean Baker will also debut, according to festival organizers and media reports. The ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 12 in Berlin, recognizing Yeoh’s decades-long global film career and continued screen work.
The honor comes as Yeoh prepares for the world premiere of Sandiwara, a project created with Baker and produced in collaboration with fashion house Self-Portrait. The film is expected to screen during the festival, which opens in mid-February and draws major international filmmakers and actors each year.
Reports describe Sandiwara as a story rooted in Malaysian life and identity, unfolding across everyday settings rather than large studio environments. The project marks a return to themes connected to Yeoh’s cultural background while highlighting her continued presence in global cinema.
Yeoh, born in 1962 in Ipoh, Malaysia, has built a career spanning more than four decades across Asian and Western film industries. She gained early recognition in Hong Kong action cinema, later achieving worldwide acclaim through roles in productions including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Everything Everywhere All at Once, the latter earning her the Academy Award for best actress in 2023.
Her recent and upcoming work includes voice acting in the animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2, a lead role in the television series Blade Runner 2099, and appearances in future Avatar sequels, reflecting sustained demand for her performances across film and streaming platforms.
Festival officials said the Berlinale tribute recognizes Yeoh’s influence on international cinema and her long-standing artistic achievements. The award will be presented during the festival’s opening ceremony, where the new film premiere is also expected to draw industry attention.
