A small earthquake San Ramon in California’s East Bay on Friday, briefly shaking nearby communities but causing no reported injuries or damage, according to officials. The tremor was recorded in the morning hours and was felt lightly by residents across parts of Contra Costa County, authorities said.

The quake registered a preliminary magnitude of about 3.0 and occurred at a shallow depth, data from the U.S. Geological Survey showed. Shallow earthquakes are more likely to be felt at the surface even when their magnitudes are relatively low.

Local emergency management officials said they received no immediate reports of structural damage or requests for assistance following the shaking. Public safety agencies continued to monitor conditions but said no further action was required.

Residents in San Ramon and neighboring cities reported brief shaking lasting only a few seconds. Some described a sudden jolt, while others noted mild vibrations consistent with smaller earthquakes common in the region.

The East Bay sits near several active fault lines, including branches of the Calaveras and San Andreas fault systems. Seismologists note that minor earthquakes occur regularly in this part of Northern California and do not necessarily indicate a larger event is imminent.

Authorities reminded residents to review earthquake safety guidance, including securing heavy objects and practicing Drop, Cover, and Hold On during shaking.
