New York — The New York Jets have agreed to acquire veteran safety Minkah Fitzpatrick from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round draft pick, according to league sources and multiple media reports Monday. The move comes ahead of the start of the NFL’s new league year and is expected to become official Wednesday when the trade window opens.

Minkah Fitzpatrick, a five-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time First-Team All-Pro, is also expected to sign a three-year contract extension worth about $40 million with the Jets, according to reports citing his representation and league officials.

The Dolphins will receive a seventh-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft that was originally owned by the Los Angeles Chargers.

The 29-year-old defensive back started 14 games for Miami during the 2025 season, recording 82 tackles, one sack, seven passes defended and one interception.

Minkah Fitzpatrick move marks another shift in a career that has included multiple high-profile trades. Drafted 11th overall by the Dolphins in 2018 after a standout career at the University of Alabama, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019, where he developed into one of the league’s top safeties and earned several All-Pro honors.

He returned to Miami before the 2025 season as part of a trade involving cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith.

For the Jets, the acquisition adds an experienced playmaker to a defense undergoing changes under new head coach Aaron Glenn. The team had uncertainty at the safety position with several players approaching free agency, making Minkah Fitzpatrick a key veteran addition to the secondary.

The deal also provides Miami with additional salary-cap flexibility and draft capital as the franchise reshapes its roster ahead of the 2026 season.

The trade is expected to be finalized when the NFL’s new league year begins this week.
