Pima County supervisors voted to delay action on a 65-page internal report that found Sheriff Chris Nanos used his office for political gain during his 2024 reelection campaign, according to officials. The Board met in closed session April 21, 2026, for legal advice on waiving attorney-client privilege before continuing the matter to May 26, the Pima County said. The report was prepared by outside firm NorthStar Employment and Legal Solutions for the Pima County Human Resources Department.
Republican Supervisor Steve Christy moved to waive attorney-client privilege and release the document to the public, but the motion died without a second. Supervisor Matt Heinz then moved to continue the agenda item, a motion seconded by Board Chair Jennifer Allen. It passed on a party-line vote, with Christy, the sole Republican, voting against it, officials said.
The investigation centers on Nanos’ conduct during his 2024 campaign against challenger Lappin, the report stated. Sheriff Nanos, who leads law enforcement in Arizona’s second-most populous county, won reelection last year. The board has not indicated whether the report will be released at the May 26 meeting, only that discussion was postponed.
Supervisors convened the executive session “for legal advice and direction related to the potential waiver of attorney-client privilege” regarding the NorthStar report, according to the meeting agenda. The Human Resources Department commissioned the outside review to examine the sheriff’s actions during the election cycle.
In separate county developments, the Pima County Attorney’s Office announced February 10, 2026, that James Allerton would serve as its new 88-Crime Program Coordinator. The office also released statements earlier this year addressing federal enforcement activity and ICE operations in the region, the office said.
The supervisors’ vote means the findings against Sheriff Nanos remain sealed for at least another month while the board weighs legal guidance. The story is developing.
