Quarterback Justin Fields has joined the Pittsburgh Steelers after being traded by the Chicago Bears, marking a significant shift for both franchises as the NFL offseason reshapes several rosters. The deal, confirmed by the teams during the 2024 offseason, sends Fields to Pittsburgh in exchange for draft compensation, according to league officials.
Justin Fields, the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, spent three seasons in Chicago. During his time with the Bears, he became known for his dual-threat ability, combining passing production with strong rushing performances that set multiple quarterback rushing records for the franchise.
The trade came after Chicago secured the first overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft and later chose quarterback Caleb Williams, signaling a reset at the position. Team leadership indicated the move would allow Justin Fields an opportunity to compete for playing time elsewhere while the Bears begin a new era at quarterback.
In Pittsburgh, Justin Fields joins a quarterback room that includes veteran Russell Wilson. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said the organization views Fields as a talented player with significant upside who can develop within the team’s system.
League analysts noted that Fields brings mobility and athleticism that could add a new dimension to Pittsburgh’s offense. However, his role with the Steelers will depend on competition during training camp and preseason preparation.
During the 2023 season with Chicago, Fields recorded more than 2,500 passing yards along with over 600 rushing yards, continuing a trend that made him one of the league’s most dynamic running quarterbacks. Despite flashes of high-level play, the Bears finished with one of the NFL’s worst records, contributing to the franchise’s decision to move in a different direction.
The Steelers have emphasized roster stability in recent years, reaching the playoffs multiple times under Tomlin’s leadership. Team officials said the addition of Fields provides depth and potential long-term value at the quarterback position.
Fields is expected to report with the team for offseason workouts as preparations begin for the upcoming NFL season.
